John, the owner of a small failing business, is tricked by a strange little man to sell his company for three thousand shares of an unknown stock called BEAN (Biomicroscopy Endoscopic Arterial Neurosurgery). Advances In Antiviral Drug Design, Volume 4 $48.98 The fourth volume of Advances in Antiviral Drug Design is keeping up with the recent progress made in the broad field of antiviral drug research and encompasses six specific directions that have opened new avenues for the treatment of HIV and other virus infections.First, as the introductory chapter, the different new anti-HIV agents that are now in preclinical or clinical development are reviewed by E. De Clercq. This includes new NRTIs, NNRTIs and PIs, but also HIV entry/fusion inhibitors as well as integrase inhibitors, and some of these agents, such as the NRTI emtricitabine [(-)FTC] and the PI atazanavir, may soon be licensed for clinical use.Second, high expectations are vested in the potential therapeutic usefulness of inhibitors of HIV integration, a point of no return in the life cycle of HIV, and this approach is highlighted by D.J. Hazuda and S.D. Young.Third, as all currently available PIs can be described as “peptidomimetic”, and, therefore, expected to demonstrate overlapping virus-drug resistance and side effect profiles, it would be interesting to see how a non-peptidic protease inhibitor such as tipranavir behaves, and this is covered by D. Mayers, K. Curry, V. Kohlbrenner and S. McCallister.Fourth, neuraminidase inhibitors such as zanamivir (that has to be inhaled) and oseltamivir (that can be administered via the oral route) have gained a definitive status as antiviral drugs useful for both therapy and prophylaxis of influenza A and B virus infections; as they target a specific influenza viral enzyme, neuraminidase (or sialidase), they may be expected to block newly emerging influenza viruses as well, and the design of neuraminidase inhibitors hasreceived due attention of H. Jin and C.U. Kim.Fifth, while the major current efforts in antiviral drug development have shifted from herpesviruses towards HIV and hepatitis viruses [hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV)], it is interesting to note that by switching from |

Antitrust and the Triumph of Economics: Institutions, Expertise, and Policy Change $30.18 Some of the chief aims of President Ronald Reagan’s economic agenda were to reduce the “regulatory burden,” minimize state intervention, and reinvigorate market mechanisms. Toward these ends, his administration limited antitrust enforcement to technical cases of price-fixing, invoking the doctrine of the Chicago school of economics. In Antitrust and the Triumph of Economics, Marc Eisner shows that the so-called “Reagan revolution” was but an extension of well-established trends. He examines organizational and procedural changes in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Jusice and the Federal Trade Commission that predated the 1980 election and forced the subsequent redefinition of policy.During their early years, the Antitrust Division and the FTC gave little attention to economic analysis. In the period following World War II, however, economic analysis assumed an increasingly important role in both agencies, and economists rose in status from being members of support staff to being pivotal decision makers who, in effect, shaped the policies for which elected officials were generally assumed to be responsible. In the 1960s and 1970s, critical shifts in prevailing economic theory within the academic community were transmitted into the agencies. This had a profound effect on how antitrust was conceptualized in the federal government. Thus, when Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, the antitrust agencies were already pursuing a conservative enforcement program.Eisner’s study challenges dominant explanations of policy change through a focus on institutional evolution. It has important implications for current debates on the state, professionalization, and the delegation of authority.A UNC Press Enduring Edition — UNC Press Enduring Editions use the latest in digital technology to make available again books from our distinguished backlist that were previously out of print. Cases and Materials on U.s. Antitrust in Global Context, 2010 Supplement $22.83 This casebook supplement is, in itself, a compendium of modern antitrust law. It presents or summarizes the ten U.S. Supreme Court antitrust cases decided since Trinko in 2004, which span almost all areas of antitrust law from resale price maintenance and tying to predatory buying, price-squeezing, joint ventures, the single-entity doctrine, extraterritorial jurisdiction, and the antitrust/regulation interface. As well, it presents contemporary merger and monopoly analysis, merger guideline revisions, the FTC’’s revitalization of its unfairness jurisdiction, and challenges to reverse payment pharmaceutical settlements, and it contains sufficient substantive excerpts from the European Microsoft case to allow an appreciation of the US/EU fault lines. |

Chasing the Green $22.99 Ryan Hurst, Jeremy London, and William Devane star in director Russ Emanuel’s docudrama detailing the Federal Trade Commission’s case against an independent sales organization seeking to redefine the way Americans use credit cards. Adam (London) and Ross Franklin (Hurst) were still in their twenties when they became millionaires by marketing electronic terminals for credit card transactions. It was the early ’90s, and Americans were spending more money than ever before. But while Adam and Ross had ambition to spare, their refusal to acknowledge the demands of others more powerful revealed a certain lack of business savvy. Ignoring government warnings to “respond” to various complaints regarding their practices, the brothers built their modest startup company into a multi-million-dollar empire. But that empire would crumble when the FTC set out to destroy their company at the behest of powerful industry competitors. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Chasing the Green $26.48 Inspired by a true story… made into a motion picture.Chasing the Green is the story of two brothers who became millionaires in the 1990s while still in their 20’s. They were among the first to market electronic terminals for credit card transactions. They were confident and bold, and thus ignored warnings by the government to “respond” to numerous complaints regarding their practices. Ultimately, they were nearly destroyed by the FTC, who sought to demolish their company at the behest of their competitors in the industry. The FIRST EVER case brought by the FTC against an ISO (independent sales organization) in the electronic transaction processing industry!Chasing the Green is about young ambition in the 1990s, and the intense desire to succeed. It is also about two independent, intensely driven men unready to accept the importance of working in an interdependent world. They learn, late in the game, that when we refuse to acknowledge the demands of others more powerful, we do so at our peril. Our story centers on two ambitious brothers, Adam and Ross — who, with their friends, build a start-up company into a multi-million dollar empire. It follows not only their triumphs, but their antics (so many funny stories) — and their selfassured camaraderie that would later prove their undoing.About the AuthorCraig Frankel retired at the young age of 38 after selling his and his brother’s company. To complement its wide scope, Direct Marketing Rules of Thumb also provides greater in-depth coverage of specific direct marketing aspects than any previous book on the subject. Empowering personal privacy: The control of personal information in the digital sphere. $49.99 The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the institutional practices and mass behavior that structure personal information flow in the digital sphere. The central question is how the interplay among institutional, cultural, and political forces shapes the definitions of public and private—specifically, how institutions and users respond to the potential of individual empowerment in the control of personal information. The dissertation draws upon three methodologies: (1) content analysis, (2) survey research and (3) policy analyses.;The analysis determined that commonly used interface designs for active control of personal information were highly ineffective. Further, differential knowledge of privacy options has strong effects on user behavior independent of levels of concern about privacy. The analysis concludes that current FTC privacy policy guidelines are less than fully successful because of these individual and institutional constraints.;Theoretically, this analysis posits that new technologies do indeed have intrinsic properties, yet the social construction of their use and implementation does not happen in a vacuum. Instead, it is understood to be embedded in the complex interplay of institutional/economic, cultural/psychological, and political/policy factors. The potential of empowerment remains highly contingent upon a forceful policy initiative to address these structural and cultural constraints. |
